Korean public holidays and clinic closures: planning a medical trip for late 2026 and early 2027
Which Korean public holidays close Seoul clinics between now and spring 2027, why Chuseok and Seollal matter more than the calendar suggests, and how to schedule consultations, procedures and follow-ups around them.
Korean clinics are private businesses, and on the major holidays most of them close completely, sometimes for longer than the official public holiday. If a procedure or a follow-up visit lands next to Chuseok or Seollal, the whole trip can shift. Here is what to know for the coming months.
The dates that matter
- Chuseok, the Korean harvest festival: 24–26 September 2026, followed by a substitute holiday on Monday 28 September because the holiday overlaps a Saturday. Many clinics close for the full five days and some for the whole week.
- National Foundation Day: Saturday 3 October 2026, with a substitute holiday on Monday 5 October.
- Hangul Day: Friday 9 October 2026.
- Christmas Day: Friday 25 December 2026. Some clinics also close between Christmas and New Year.
- New Year's Day: Friday 1 January 2027.
- Seollal, the Lunar New Year: 6 February 2027 falls on a Saturday. The holiday period runs from 5 to 7 February, with substitute holidays expected on the following weekdays. Confirm the final dates on the official calendar before booking.
- Independence Movement Day: Monday 1 March 2027.
Official holiday dates are set by the Korean government and can change when substitute holidays are designated. The Korea Tourism Organization's 1330 helpline confirms them in English, Japanese, Chinese and several other languages.
Why holidays hit medical trips harder than tourism
A public holiday closes a museum for a day. It closes a clinic's operating room, its aftercare desk and its pharmacy partner at the same time, and it moves everyone's follow-up appointments into the days just before and after. The week before Chuseok fills with domestic patients finishing treatment; the week after fills with rebooked follow-ups.
Flights into Incheon, KTX trains and hotels also fill and reprice around Chuseok and Seollal, and airport traffic is heavy. If you are choosing between two weeks, choose the one without a holiday in the middle.
Peak seasons without a holiday
Korean clinics also have domestic peak seasons: the university winter break from late December through February and the summer break in July and August, when students and teachers schedule procedures. Consultations remain available, but preferred surgeons book out earlier and follow-up slots get tighter. Autumn outside the Chuseok week, and late spring, are usually the calmest periods.
How to plan around a closure
