What actually happens at a first consultation in a Seoul clinic

Check-in and paperwork

Reception asks for your passport and has you complete an intake form covering medical history, medications, allergies and previous procedures. Clinics that regularly treat international patients offer the form in English; at others your interpreter fills it in with you. Expect to be photographed or scanned for surgical consultations, because surgeons plan from standardized images rather than from memory.

Arrive ten to fifteen minutes early. Clinics in Gangnam and Apgujeong run tight schedules, and a late arrival usually shortens the time you get with the doctor rather than delaying the next patient.

The coordinator conversation

Many clinics start with an in-house coordinator who asks about your goals, budget and timeline before you see the doctor. This conversation shapes what is presented later, so be precise: say what you want to change, what you want to keep, and what you are not willing to do. If a coordinator steers toward additional procedures you did not ask about, you can decline to discuss them until you have heard the doctor.

The doctor's assessment

The surgeon or dermatologist examines the area, reviews the photographs and explains which techniques are realistic for your anatomy. A useful consultation covers the method, the type of anaesthesia, expected downtime, the follow-up schedule and what would happen if a revision were needed. Ask directly who performs the procedure and who handles the aftercare visits.

Time with the doctor is often shorter than patients expect. Prepare three to five questions in advance; the procedure guides on this site list the ones worth asking for each treatment.

The estimate and the schedule

After the doctor leaves, the coordinator returns with an estimate and possible dates. Ask for it in writing and check what it includes: anaesthesia, facility fees, follow-up visits, medication, garments or aftercare treatments. Clinics usually ask for a deposit to hold a date. You do not have to decide during the visit.

• Ask for the estimate in writing, with inclusions and exclusions listed line by line.
• Ask how long the estimate stays valid and what the cancellation and refund terms are.
• Ask who to contact after hours during recovery, and in which language they answer.

Comparing more than one clinic

Two or three consultations for the same procedure are normal, and clinics expect it. Book them on the same day or on adjacent days so the comparison stays fresh, and bring the same list of questions to each. An interpreter or concierge who attends all of them helps you notice where the doctors' recommendations differ and why.
